HISTORY

Serving the Dexter community for over 40 years!

Over the past 44 years, the Dexter Lions Club has supported many groups, activities and projects in the Dexter Community. The Dexter Lions were chartered in March, 1979.

 

The Dexter Lions certainly believe in their motto, “WE SERVE”. Each year the Lions carry out over 30 projects and support over 15 local organizations in the Dexter Community. The Dexter Lions also support the mission of Lions Clubs International in participating in activities supporting the Blind and Visually impaired. They have provided support to Leader Dogs for the Blind, Penrickton Center for Blind Children and Eversight which provides cornea tissue for cornea transplants. Dexter Lions assist families in need by providing funds for eye exams and eyeglasses. The Dexter Lions also collect used eyeglasses at various businesses in Dexter for eyeglass mission trips. The Dexter Lions also visit preschools and do free eye screenings for children 2 to 6 year olds. Each year the Lions hold their White Cane days where they collect funds from the community to help support their sight projects.

 

The Dexter Lions Club members help raise funds through their various fundraisers. These include: Christmas Tree sales, Dexter Daze Food wagon, Apple Daze and Fall Sports Program. Apple Daze in a community event in October that is more of a community service project. Funds from the Fall Sports Program go to provide four scholarships each year to Dexter High School Seniors. The club also sells engraved bricks for Monument Park.

 

The Dexter Lions also support Dexter youth in the community. They sponsor both a Cub Scout Troop and Boy Scout troop along with providing funds to all the Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops when requested. They sponsor a Peace Poster contest at Mill Creek School and provide funds for Special Education camp every summer. They support the Dexter High School Prom and Shop With A Cop.

 

The Dexter Lions are proud to whatever needs to be done in Dexter and helping getting it done. They were responsible for building and funding the Gazebo in Monument Park. They supported and helped with the playground equipment in Lions Park. In 2012, the Dexter Lions were able to get $10,000.00 from Lions Clubs International within 24 hours to support the families affected by the tornado that went through Dexter.

 

The Dexter Lions support and work with many other groups in Dexter including; Dexter Senior Center, Gordon Hall, Dexter Area Historical Society, Dexter-Ann Arbor Run, Dexter Library, Dexter Community Schools, Faith In Action, Dexter Community Players, and the Dexter Bicentennial committee  just to name a few.
